Gentamicin is an antibiotic. It stops bacterial growth by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions.

Gentamicin is used in the treatment of bacterial infections.

✔️ Pharmacology

Gentamicin Sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It has proven bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, including:

• E. coli
• Klebsiella
• Proteus
• Pseudomonas aeruginosa
• Penicillin-resistant strains of Staph. aureus

The mechanism of action involves interference with bacterial protein synthesis.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Gentin 0.3% Cream

• Dosage: Apply 3 times daily.
• Instructions:
  • Wash the affected area with soap and water.
  • Dry thoroughly before application.
  • Remove any crusts present before applying the ointment for maximum contact with the infecting organisms.

Reduced Renal Clearance:

Induction of Hypocalcaemia:

  • Biphosphonates
• This combination may induce hypocalcemia.

Contraindicated Combinations:

• With:
  • Agalsidase alfa
  • Agalsidase beta
• These can inhibit alpha-galactosidase activity.

Potentially Fatal Interactions:

• Increased Incidence of Ototoxicity:

    • Ethacrynic acid
    • Furosemide
  • This combination can significantly increase the risk of ototoxicity (damage to the ear).

Potentiation of Nephrotoxicity:

  • Cephalosporins

Potentiation of Neuromuscular Blocking Agents:

• Gentamicin can potentiate the effects of neuromuscular blocking agents, which can lead to increased muscle relaxation and potentially severe respiratory depression.

• Hypersensitivity to Gentamicin.
• Pregnancy and myasthenia gravis.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy: Category D. Use during pregnancy only if needed, due to potential risk.
• Lactation: Gentamicin can be excreted in small amounts in breast milk. Breastfeeding should be discontinued during treatment.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• Do not apply to patients with hypersensitivity to Gentamicin.
• Use cautiously in patients with suspected glaucoma.
